Episode 46: Feeling Pretty: Sweet Wines and Surprises

Episode 46: Feeling Pretty: Sweet Wines and Surprises

This episode features a tasting of four wines on the sweeter side that not only surprised us but would be delightful choices for the sweet wine lover or the hypersensitive vinotype (see www.myvinotype.com or revisit Episode 44 for empowerment). Maybe we had a little too much fun with this episode, so we hope you’ll enjoy it and share it with your friends who like the sweet stuff!

Steph:  “Welcome Wine-Two-Five listeners! Thank you so much for joining us for Episode 46! I’m Steph, and I’m up in sunny Fort Collins, and Val is down in Colorado Springs today.”

Val:  Yeah – snowy Colorado Springs! The sun is just coming out and Steph and I have a special sweet wine tribute today in honor of our recent guest Tim Hanni. He said on our show – episode 44 – that we should tell our sweet wine drinking friends ‘Hey, I never knew you had more taste buds than me!’ We’re drinking some leftovers from our recent tasting of wines that our Sweet and Hypersensitive vinotypes could really be down with.

“Let’s revisit this tasting – which we like to call … the “Skittles” tasting.”

Steph:  “That was a lot of fun  – a rainbow of flavors and colors!  Justin and I enjoyed Frisk the “prickly Grenache” with Chinese food on Sunday.”

Factoid:

Val: “Hey Steph, what’s your out-of-the-box factoid this week?”

Steph:  “Sake vocabulary that hit me in the face when I was nibbling at Ototo in Denver: prefecture= district in Japan. Japan is divided into 47 Prefectures, or districts. If you’d like to read a little more about sake, there’s 2 great posts on SWE’s blog written by Mr Mark Rashap, CWE and Marketing Coordinator for the Society of Wine Educators!”

Val: “Also, remember Master Sommelier Sally Mohr gave us a little Sake lesson back in episode 27.”

Shoutouts:

Steph: “Val is a wine rockstar and killed-it on Saturday’s SWEbinar called “Little Fish in a Big Pond”. You are an outstanding speaker-presenter! Nice work on the slides and loved when you busted a rhyme.”

Val: “Dustin gave us a very animated and extremely informed tour of Vom Foss in Fort Collins where you can sample liqueurs, whiskies, brandies, wines, olive oils, vinegars and spices. Everything for the gourmand in one shop. Thank you, Dustin – it’s a treat to be guided by someone who truly loves what he does – and knows his product line inside out. I was particularly stoked to find a bottle of Moroccan wine!”

Jen:

Jen took a cue from Steph’s Fat Cork gift during the holiday episode, posted a picture of HER first shipment, which pairs nicely with the #W25Challenge

Lynn:

Remember Steph talking about Byrrh (pronounced 'beer') a few episodes ago? Our listener, Lynn, in France got her ‪#‎W25Challenge‬ on and was able to stop by and visit the place where this Aperitif is made! Chapeau, Lynn!

Susan:

Susan found a Palava while she was in Australia! Well, it's a white grape, and a cross between Muller-Thurgau & Savagin Rose (which is like Gewurztraminer, but less perfumed). The "Palava Hills" is also a popular growing area in Moravia, Czech Republic, where they also grow Riesling and Pinot Gris, among others. Brava, Susan Golicic, for finding this gem.

Val:

Since Val was giving a presentation on this little known Burgundian "fish" in the big French wine pond, she sipped her 1st Saint-Bris, a Sauvignon Blanc from the Grand Auxerrois region of Burgundy (which is actually closer to Champagne and the Loire than Dijon!

Steph is always getting her #W25Challenge on - this was the "Prickly Grenache" from Frisk making her very happy!
